Antonio Basa is an olive grower in the Extramadura region of Spain. At night, he has to patrol his olive groves to chase away thieves who try to steal from his trees. Drought has halved the harvest in the last two yearsin Spain, making the price of olive oil skyrocket.

Evelina runs the Šilainiai Project in the Soviet era housing estate she grew up in. The Lithuanian artist transforms wasteland into flowering gardens to promote a sustainable community. Bartek Glowacki in Poland has founded a start-up for small solar houses that produce more energy than they consume.

Eastern Europe: The New Generation

Hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from Eastern Europe and Africa work on Italian farms harvesting tomatoes, oranges and olives. Their working conditions are terrible and their salaries are pitifully low. Yvan Sagnet is campaigning against this form of modern slavery by creating the organisation against agricultural labour exploitation, No Cap.

Nodar Chachanidze is concerned about the environmental damage caused by manganese mining. Together with young people from the region, he has set up an environmental club. Nané Paskevichyan is campaigning to preserve a monument to the victims of Stalinist terror, which has largely been forgotten.

Nodar is fighting against environmental destruction in Georgia whilst Nané fights against forgetting the past in Armenia.

Răzvan Nedu is almost blind, but even with only 1% visual acuity, he is an experienced climber. Romania's first Paralympic climbing world vice-champion, he is a role model for disabled people in his country. In Moldova, Sergiu Candraman, a mechatronics engineer, is trying to get closer to the stars. It was thanks to the two observatories he helped to build that Moldova was able to launch its first satellite into space.

Sergiu and Răzvan show how big dreams can be realised and their experiences passed on to the next generation.

Tijana gave up her metropolitan life to renovate her family's watermill, which had fallen into disrepair. Thanks to the know-how of her 92-year-old grandfather and clever use of social media, she has turned her business idea into a reality. Ivan learnt the blacksmith's trade on his own and is trying to keep his grandfather's workshop going.

Tijana and Ivan left their old lives behind to take on their family’s traditional crafts.

When she was at school, Lucia dreamed of one day being able to drive around her neighbourhood in a red Ferrari. This dream has helped the 32-year-old Slovak of Vietnamese origin to cope with racism. Blerta, from Prishtina in Kosovo always has new projects on the go. When she realised that she was the only woman working in programming in Kosovo, she decided to remedy the situation herself.

Luca and Blerta, from Kosovo and Slovakia, both are focused on their life goals.

It was only when Dora left Bulgaria that the young architect realised that the immense communist monument at Busludja was a national treasure worth protecting. Emanuel and Andreea, on the other hand, never wanted to leave their native Romania. Unlike many young people of their generation, they did not go abroad, but left the big city to live a rural life.

Stay or leave? Dora, Emanuel and Andreea deal with this question in different ways.

In 2018, ARTE visited the island of La Gomera in the Canaries, to meet people who have dropped out of society and live an unconventional life in caves by the sea. Returning to the paradise island in 2022, COVID has reshuffled the deck and reinforced this yearning for simplicity and freedom.
